Thanks to the Newcastle City Council, Wallsend Oval Number Two has some fantastic new lights. Incredibly bright, these will provide teams with two fields to train on and allow the club to host more night games. Let’s enjoy them.

UNDER 11/D'S DEFEAT FRONTRUNNERS

JUNIORS //

The Junior Devil’s approached this match in high spirits after a couple of weeks off due to wet weather and were keen to try and impress against top-of-the-table Nelson Bay. The boy’s started the game strong with a few early chances and lots of good solid defence.

The game was starting to turn against us with Nelson Bay beginning to create a few good chances but our back line was holding firm, anchored by Dylan and Liam. Nelson Bay continued to press and managed to knock one in. A few of the boy’s were finding it hard-going with a lack of games over the last few weeks.

After the hard work done by Leighton on the wing took its toll, he came to have a rest and let the little pocket-rocket Luke have a chance to break down the solid ‘Bay defence. We started to press and force a few mistakes, gaining the upper-hand in possession and creating some good chances, but the ‘Bay defence was holding strong.

The boy’s kept pushing through and were rewarded with a goal after some great build-up play from Alex, who pressured the right back into a mistake, and cut the ball across the edge of the box to Riley who then smartly flicked it on to Matty. In a wide area, Matty spotted the ‘keeper away from his near-post and calmly slotted the ball in from 25-yards to make it 1-1.

The boy’s continued to dominate the first-half and were unlucky not to score through Jacob who saw his shot from 10 yards just miss. Half-time ended 1-1. After coming back out in the second-half, we fired a few warning shots at goal but with no luck.

Jared was buzzing around at the back, keeping the strikers for the ‘Bay honest and challenging any player that came near him. He was working hard and kept the pressure on. However, Nelson Bay were beginning to take back control of the game and it took a number of brilliant one-on-one saves from young goalkeeper Zac, to keep us in the game.

Inspired by these efforts, the boy’s lifted with the back-line scrambling well. Nelson Bay were starting to get rattled after a few bone-crunching challenges by Nathan, and by Xander showing his wide-range of passing abilities. Young Travis up-front was working hard to try and relieve a bit of pressure off the defence and was starting to get into some good positions to link up with the midfield. The boy’s were doing everything they could to hold out with Alex even trying some diversionary tactics with his ripped shorts - it didn’t work but it gave the referee a chuckle, anyway.

Continuing to absorb the pressure, we were looking good on the counter-attack. Then, in the last minute of the game, a ball was slipped through to Travis who then smartly switched the play, splitting the opposition defence to find the speedster Luke tearing down the right-wing. He took the ball to the base-line while holding off his defender and then cut it across the penalty area to find Leighton who tapped home to score a dramatic winner.

The excitement shown by the players and parents truly showed how exciting a game this was with myself having to hold back young Riley on the bench who was determined to run on the field and celebrate with his teammates. We then held well for the tense last seconds to record a great victory, 2-1. Looking forward to next week against local rivals Plattsburg, and hoping for a win to keep them within touching distance of the top-four.

All are welcome to come down and watch and support the boys next week with kick-off at 10.00am at Wallsend Oval.

Match Report by Coach, Trent Richards.

FORTUNES IMPROVING FOR REDS

NEWS //

A string of positive results across all three grades is feeding a positive atmosphere within the club. Matches against Tenambit and Beresfield have seen The Reds push hard for decent results; edging all three grades closer to the top-four and reflecting to earnest efforts of the clubs’ players.

For the first time in several years, W.F.C. have completed a clean-sweep of results against their opposition, this time in the form of Tenambit Sharks. From the earlier washed out Round Two fixture at The Gardens, both Third and Reserve Grades managed to complete 5-1, and 3-1 wins, respectively. Subsequent rain put end to any hope of First Grade competing during that week, but an improvement in the weather in recent weeks has seen the rescheduled match take place.

In a very scrappy affair, W.F.C. managed to get on top early with several decent chances but failed to capitalise. Both teams struggled to maintain a passing rhythm, with errors and mistakes occurring frequently to disrupt the quality of the match. The less said of this match, the better. However, the main moment, only minutes from full-time, arrived when a woeful cross-field ball by the Tenambit defender found and unmarked and surprised Reece Wright, who buried the one-on-one with a great deal of composure. That goal sealed the 1-0 win, and gave the defence its first clean-sheet of the season - one that was much deserved.

The round at the weekend, the first of the second-half of the season saw Beresfield come to The Gardens. On a very positive day, Third Grade hammered the opposition 3-0 thanks to goals from Daniel Hanson, and two other players who I’ve forgotten [sorry, guys!]. While, in Reserves, W.F.C. came out on-top after securing a priceless 4-3 win in a classic, attacking match. Leading goal-scorer, Sam Paradisi, defender-to-striker extraordinaire buried a screamer, which was the pick of the bunch.
Both Reserves and Thirds should acquire some confidence from these results and push hard to continue this run of good form.

After losing 4-2 in the corresponding fixture, one that W.F.C. felt a little aggrieved by as they ought to have won it, similar patterns emerged. After wrestling for dominance in the first half, Beresfield took an early lead through a wobbly long-ranged effort. Not to be outdone, Wallsend replied with periods of sustained pressure to equalise through Anthony Koch, who buried a loose ball from a corner after some dirty work from Callan Medcalf.

On the stroke of half-time, a flashpoint occurred when a foul was committed and subsequent rough play should’ve been penalised but wasn’t. An injured Wallsend player laid on the ground while the opposition ran past to score a very contentious goal to make it 2-1 to Beresfield. This brought a lot more passion into the game with Wallsend feeling cheated and hard done by.

The second half was owned by the Reds, and as Koch finished his second of the game to level it up at 2-2, Beresfield were struggling to keep up. An excellent midfield showing by Mark Walker, Trent Milton, and James Devon made chances frequently, and with the inclusion of Daniel Craig into the midfield, W.F.C. were running all over their counterparts.

Unfortunately, after a few missed chances, the match finished at a 2-2 draw. The team should be pleased with their commitment and desire to twice come from a goal down to get back on level terms. Jake Pegler had an excellent game at the back, and made it hard for Beresfield to gain any ascendancy towards the dying minutes of the match.
The Reds take on Tenambit again this Saturday, 02/07/11, at Beryl Humble Complex.

First Grade: Wallsend F.C. 2 Beresfield 2

Reserve Grade: Wallsend F.C. 4 Beresfield 3

A stunning come-from-behind performance has secured Wallsend FC derby-day honours with a 3-1 victory against Plattsburg-Maryland at Col Curran. In the first competitive clash recorded between the teams, a healthy number of supporters lined the field to get behind the teams and create an excellent atmosphere.

In the opening matches of the day, third grade competed well against their opponents to secure a very decent 2-2 draw. The second-half saw W.F.C. chasing the game at 2-1 down, but a long-range shot from James Devon chipped the goalkeeper to equalise the match. They could’ve gone on to win it, pushing hard for the winner and creating some half-chances, but in the end the team had to settle for the draw.

Reserves suffered a disappointing fate, falling to a 2-0 loss after some sloppy defending for the first goal, and a dubious penalty for the second, ended any hope of gaining a point out of the match. The team are still traveling well on the table, and need to boost up their consistency levels to stay there.

The main match of the day, the clash between local rivals in first grade, saw a heated and passionate affair with both teams intent on claiming local bragging rights. It was Plattsburg who secured the advantage going into half-time with a nice finish, but W.F.C. could count themselves a little unlucky to go in behind after an even first-half.

Coach Chris Gallagher offered a few words of encouragement to the boys, knowing they were close to an equaliser - and so it turned out. After receiving a through-ball, striker Anthony Koch brought the ball into the box where he was barged off it, a foul was given - a penalty you’d think - but the referee instead gave a free-kick right on the line of the eighteen-yard box. Justice was duly delivered when Trent Milton stepped up and buried the ensuing free-kick to make it 1-1 and anyone’s game.

Shortly thereafter, Mark Walker found himself on the end of headbutt from an opposition player after a minor altercation, seeing himself unluckily sent off for a second yellow card and the protagonist sent off with a straight red. Both teams found themselves with a bit of space and open field to use.

A huge turning point in the match occurred when Plattsburg were awarded a corner-kick from which a highly contentious, and quite honestly, a baffling decision was made to award a penalty to Plattsburg. All players and supporters clearly had little idea what had happened; the decision was very much against the spirit of the game with both teams contesting every loose ball honestly. However, a heroic save from Alex Balston, who has now saved his last four penalties, kept Wallsend locked at one apiece.

That miss took a visible toll on the Plattsburg players, and as W.F.C. took their break of luck with earnest, the game began to swing in their favour. Another corner-kick saw the next game-changer, when Luke Alexander crossed for Shayne Knight who buried a header unopposed into the back of the net to put Wallsend in the lead. It was his first ever senior goal, one that he celebrated with tangible passion and emotion.

With only minutes left, Wallsend were defending as a solid team to prevent any late equaliser, but as the ball broke to Alexander again, a counter-attack was launched. Alexander pushed hard down the left-wing and crossed superbly and unselfishly to Anthony Koch who put the game beyond doubt with a timely tap-in to make it 3-1. The excellent Wallsend faithful were rapturous, getting behind their team when they needed it most.

The match was a credit to the club, its players, supporters and everyone involved as it showed the type of passion and commitment the club has been built on for the last 124 years of existence. It was good to see the heart return.

A number of senior players and coaches of Wallsend F.C. have been kind enough to take time out of their schedules to engage with the local community through the fun of football. Students of St. Patrick’s Primary School have been participating in football lessons and games to support positive physical activity and to develop interests in sport.

Over the course of a school-term, students are encouraged to enjoy themselves through participation and are guided through drills and games to increase their skills. A term’s work culminates in a cross-school Gala day in which two mixed teams [girls and boys], both for Year 3/4’s and Year 5/6’s, will compete against schools from the local region.

Senior Wallsend F.C. players, Reece Wright, Luke Alexander and Anthony Koch, and senior coaches, Chris Gallagher, Peter Gallagher, and Strat Kapalos, have kindly put their hands up to assist in setting up activities for the students and will be present as coaches when the Gala day comes around.

The players involved have deeply appreciated the happy faces and smiles that greet them weekly, a large, but well-behaved group of students that are always willing to get involved and have a go.

Wallsend F.C. would like to thank St. Patrick’s Primary School and its students for leaving an endearing impression on the players and coaches, and sincerely hope that the remaining weeks of the program will be as fruitful as its early stages.

Here’s hoping some of the St. Patrick’s students become future Red Devils!

Photo

JUNIORS TRIVIA NIGHT

EVENTS //

After the opening day win against Garden Suburb, a midweek match against Beresfield and the weekend’s match at Kotara South saw W.F.C. fall to two defeats. A delayed start to the season due to wet-weather was followed by a quick-fire three matches in seven days, a pile-up that resulted in a few niggling injuries and fitness issues.

W.F.C. met Beresfield at Pasadena Oval during the week, with matches played in freezing conditions - gloves were essential. The first-grade side came out of the sheds awfully slowly, allowing the home-team to get on top early and duly punish us with two-goals. It wasn’t a very noteworthy performance by The Reds in the first-half with coach Chris Gallagher putting a rocket up the team - and rightly so.

The second-half saw a marked improvement by the team, and by the time Luke Alexander flicked a header on to Anthony Koch who ran on to score, the team was on top and looking dangerous. The midfield grabbed hold of the game, allowing the team to push on and pressurise. Shortly after W.F.C.’s first, Koch buried his second of night from a corner to equalise the match. At this point it was looking like a W.F.C. win.

Unfortunately, Beresfield found the energy to score their third and make it 3-2, a real heart-breaker. A red card to Koch for a second yellow card made the task that much harder, as the result finished 4-2 to Beresfield. Danny Byatt and Danny Williams were stand-out performers in an otherwise glum evening.

The match against Kotara South was rather abysmal. It was hard to find positives in such a heavy 4-0 defeat, but Trent Milton, Danny Williams, Danny Byatt and Mark Walker showed a lot of heart to go until the last whistle. Given that the team has a nice, one-week break from football, we ought to see a better performance from the team against Merewether at the weekend.

The Reserves pulled out a resounding 4-1 victory against Beresfield, with Mamadou ‘The Prince’ Ba scoring a cracking double - the second of which was nothing but “hello chicks!” In a very positive performance, the defence stood tall and laid the platform for the attack to go on and take the game. Mick Webb, as captain and ‘keeper, played a sterling game.

The Thirds fell just short again, falling to a 2-1 loss. A second-half performance saw a lot of improvements from the first, with the team narrowly missing the chance to secure their first points of the season.

Against Kotara South, Reserves fell to a 2-0 loss, with two second-half goals securing the win for the home team. Thirds succumbed to a heavy 4-1 loss, but Sam Paradisi scored his first goal in ten years - something he told just about everyone in a 5km radius about. All three grades are missing a few players due to injuries and suspensions, so hopefully that will be rectified in time for the next match.

W.F.C. return to The Gardens this weekend to play Merewether, followed by another midweek game at home to Tenambit. Here’s hoping the positives can return.

DEFEAT KINGFISHERS

NEWS //

Wallsend Football Club have opened their 2011 season with a 3-2 victory over Garden Suburb at The Gardens. After having the misfortune of missing several weeks of football due to relentless wet weather, it was always going to be a tough ask for all grades to stick with it for the full ninety-minutes.

An early goal from Anthony Koch put W.F.C. ahead inside ten minutes, easing some of the nerves. The score should’ve been doubled some minutes later when debutant Luke Alexander put the ball into the back of the net from a classy Trent Milton free-kick, however, a dubious decision by the linesman prevented the goal because of an apparent offside.

A clear penalty call was turned down shortly before the break, but as the ball was pushed out to the sideline, a delicate cross from Danny Byatt picked out Reece Wright who looped the ball over the ‘keeper’s head to make it 2-0. Garden Suburb, meanwhile, created a few very decent chances and could’ve been level, but failed to convert.

The second-half was the exact opposite of the first, with Garden Suburb pushing hard and eventually scoring two goals to equalise the match going into the last fifteen minutes. A missed penalty from W.F.C. could’ve sealed the game at 3-0, but were made to do it the hard way after the Garden Suburb comeback.

Choosing a victor at 2-2 was anyone’s guess. Milton managed to scramble the ball over the line, but again, the linesman’s flag put end to any hope of a goal - this time with the referee not noticing the linesman’s flag raised and deciding to carry on with the match. Luckily it didn’t matter in the end, with Danny Williams knocking the ball into the empty net after an Alexander chip. He dead-set snaked it.

Garden Suburb should be proud of a decent comeback, something that will hold them in good stead for the season. Good luck.

In the other grades, W.F.C. fell to a 1-0 loss in Third Grade after a late goal secured the win for Garden Suburb in what was an even match. Tighter was the clash in Reserve Grade that ended as a 0-0 draw, but W.F.C. could count themselves unlucky with some bad decision-making and missed chances preventing them from winning the match.

All three grades now look forward to tough midweek fixtures against Beresfield at Pasadena Oval. Tuesday night for Thirds and Reserves, and Thursday night for Firsts.

W.F.C. would like to thank Garden Suburb and its supporters for coming out and watching the football, and hope that they enjoyed themselves.

Final Results:

First Grade: Wallsend F.C. 3 Garden Suburb 2

Reserve Grade: Wallsend F.C. 0 Garden Suburb 0

SUCCUMB TO MAGIC

NEWS //

After an evening of Round Two Solo Cup action at The Gardens, both Charlestown City Blues and Broadmeadow Magic have progressed to the next round after defeating New Lambton and Wallsend Football Club, respectively.

The first match of the night saw NEWFM side Charlestown City Blues take on their lower-league opponents in New Lambton. In a close affair, a couple of late goals from Charlestown pushed them away from the committed Eagles, who showed some class but fell to a 3-1 loss.

In the second match of the night, NBN State League heavyweights Broadmeadow Magic took on a dedicated W.F.C. side in an encounter that showed why Magic are a quality side. Three divisions separate the clubs, but it took Magic twenty-five minutes to score the opener; soon after, the flood-gates opened.

The match finished 9-0 to the near full-strength Magic, but the W.F.C. boys will learn a great deal from playing against quality opposition and should be proud of their effort. Considering it’s only their third match of the season and the league proper has not begun, a number of positives can be carried into the coming Zone Division One season.

A lucky loser draw will provide both losing clubs with some consolation after coming out on the wrong ends of the scoreline.

Results:

New Lambton Eagles 1 vs Charlestown City Blues 3

Wallsend F.C. 0 vs Broadmeadow Magic 9

W.F.C. GREAT CONSIDERED FOR STAND NAMING HONOUR:
An interesting Newcastle Herald piece about naming the newly-developed Western Grandstand at Ausgrid Stadium after honourable Newcastle sporting identities, including W.F.C. great Reg Date. A very noteworthy inclusion into a fine list of Newcastle’s best. Link includes a poll.

TO PLAY IN ZONE DIVISION ONE

NEWS //

After a couple of weeks of the relative unknown, W.F.C. have been given confirmation by Newcastle Football that they will be competing in Zone Division One, higher than what was expected. The club can now start to build three solid teams [first, reserve and third grades] in the hope to be able to compete with the best this year.

W.F.C. will be up against the likes of Nelson Bay, Kotara South, Plattsburg, and Warners Bay, rather new opposition to what we have come up against in recent times. The first match will be up against Beresfield at Pasadena Oval on April 17th.

Interestingly, a local-derby will be on the cards this season between W.F.C. and Plattsburg, with the first derby taking place in Round Eight at Col Curran Oval. Look out for that one!

Photo

COACH GALLAGHER SIGNS WITH W.F.C.

NEWS //

The club made public after an in-house meeting that Wallsend local and former player, Chris Gallagher, was to be named first-grade coach for the upcoming 2011 season. After the news filtered through, and word-of-mouth spread, a few familiar faces from seasons passed had returned to help Gallagher rebuild the club, starting with the victory over Weston Swifts at the weekend.

Gallagher’s name is synonymous with the W.F.C., having spent a considerable part of his career either playing or connected in some manner to the committee. A tough task lies ahead to rebuild the club’s confidence, but the new coach is adamant he can get the best out of the crop of players at hand.

One of his first duties included the recruitment of team-manager Strat Kapalos, who himself has been involved with the club for a long time [including coaching a young whipper-snapper who happens to be writing this article]. Kapalos is sure to keep those bibs smelling fresh and jerseys treated with a little bit of fabric softener.

Let’s hope this announcement is the beginning of a fruitful season.

W.F.C. WIN IN SOLO CUP

NEWS //

Wallsend F.C. have defeated Weston Swifts for the second year running in the first round of the 2011 edition of Northern NSW’s Solo Cup. On a day that also saw matches between Barnsley and Cooks Hill, and Muswellbrook FC and University, a total of thirteen goals were knocked into the back of the net in another fine experience of football at The Gardens.

Barnsley and Cooks Hill went head-to-head in the morning fixture with Cooks Hill running out comfortable 3-0 winners to secure their place in the second round, while University thumped Muswellbrook 4-1 in a result that reflected the disparity in quality.

However, it was the makeshift Wallsend F.C. side that was formed in a matter of days that stole the limelight. Much has been made of the club’s issues this season - the withdrawal from the inaugural Zone Premier League - but it was a performance that reflected a strong will and fighting spirit that will bode well for the club’s players.

After going ahead two-nil in the first-half, with a superb free-kick from Trent Milton and a well-taken penalty from new-boy Mark Walker, the game changed soon after the interval with the Swifts scoring two goals to level the match. A late push by W.F.C. saw Anthony Koch pick out Milton with a cutting through-ball, where he knocked it around the ‘keeper and pushed it into the unguarded net. That goal stole the win to the jubilation of the club after a few rough weeks.

Results:

Barnsley United 0 vs Cooks Hill Utd 3

Muswellbrook FC 1 vs Newcastle University FC 4

Wallsend F.C. 3 vs Weston Swifts 2
